Week3_A pretty fun week

So this week was actually pretty fun.  Since we had our character design class cancelled I actually had extra time to spend on Product design and chores yay!  I also got a taste of group work with some of the guys here with my first group project.  It was really fun,the guys I teamed up with are super hard working and really talented I am pretty proud with what we came up with :)
My contribution to our group project for Design History - A passive designed sustainable library and focus for a sustainable community hub.  It is actually really awesome to compare this piece to some of my drawings from UWE when I was studying a Bachelors in Architecture and Environmental Engineering.  I have improved so much!

A fun trip to the Natural History Museum for Zoology.  The goal here was to adventure around the museum and gather reference for the animal we are going to design for the final.  I was mostly focusing on getting cute furry creature reference but these two guys were very cute even with the poor little dead (but probably tasty) rodent.
Here are my sketches from the museum (in blue) and my sketches from today's class where we got live guys to draw in the classroom! including a really big bunny named Danny! I got to feed him a piece of banana and stroke his head for about 15 minutes while sketching him! Highlight of the week!

In color theory I have narrowed my choices down to 4 compositions and I am pretty sure I am going with the top right image of the bunny training in the forest! Though I will probably change it a bit for the final composition which should be locked down over the next few weeks.

We also started our first painting session!! We had to do a grey scale swatch of 50% grey.  Which is actually a little trickier than I thought it would be.  The homework is to do a 5 color gradient from white to black.

As well as presenting our sustainable building we also took a field trip to Hollyhock house a Frank Lloyd Wright building super close to Gnomon! It was a beautiful house and a really cool site too! Might be visiting it again some time for reference.

Somehow I managed to find a little time to start on a new sculpture! I am not going to tell what it is going to be yet! since it will probably take me a couple of terms to get it there I will leave the suspense for a little longer!

I also did my first Storyboarding assignment too this week.  The title was My Pet wants My Food.  My story revolved around a character making dinner for his date who he doesn't know is a vegetarian.  After finding this out he has to hastily prepare a vegetarian meal for his date who ultimately gets bored and leaves. Defeated our protagonist turns back to find that his pet bunny has escaped from her cage and wants to share his dinner with him!

The last part of my character assignment - designing caricatures from your imagination.  This was so much fun and trying to implement the last two learning outcomes from the past 2 weeks helped the design a lot.  The one based on Mei shouldn't actually be in the lineup it was a mastercopy I did to try out the artists style but I totally forgot to delete it :p oops.

Lastly for Product design I had to design 3 props that fit with my original story from week1 based around the function of communication. First is a book that can allow you to remotely write to any other book of the same design by connecting through the use of runes.  Once connected anything you write in one book appears in the others.

The second device was based on a prop from Phillip Pullmans dark materials trilogy.  The crystals in this necklace resonate with the original crystal they were cut from despite the distance apart.  This way the user can use them like a pan pipe and any vibrations made to these crystals will in turn vibrate the other crystals they were cut from forming a sort of fantasy Morse code machine.

The final prop I designed which I will actually be going forward with is a glove that fires a message in a bottle.  The glove is equipped with a guidance crystal that glows when you are facing in the right direction to send your message.  The bottle itself expands into a hawk shaped device to fly the message to the desired recipient.
